Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 1 Recap

game of thrones season 3 episode 1 fullFinally “Game of Thrones” is back. After waiting for a quite long time, the winter is finally coming. It is really coming as in the last season, we saw Sam in the middle of whiteness with white walkers around him. This Season 3 is based on the book Storm of Swords, which is so far the best book in the series, as it has many great and astonishing moments. The show, of course, also reveals those great moments and surprises to the audience. So, this recap will only stick to what the show reveal without referring to the book and any book spoilers.

In the last season, we got to know many new characters but they only got very little time. This is just natural, since they only have ten hours to tell the whole story. It’s not enough. However, the first episode, Valar Dohaeris, is slower in story-telling. That’s why it gives deeper explanation, especially to the viewers who don’t read the book.

Behind the Wall, we see many things the snow has hidden. There are zombies, giants, and of course, the King Beyond the Wall, Mance Rader, who is not a king to be bowed to. Jon Snow finally meets him and he is able to talk to Mance so that he’s not going to be killed. He then plays as a spy among the Wildlings, while his friend, Sam, forgets to warn everyone about the White Walkers. He still lives, though it’s very rare.

Just like Sam, who is able to live, Tyrion also manages to stay alive from the Battle of Blackwater, after a murder attempt managed by his sister. In the last season, he enjoyed high lifestyle but in this season, he is forced into a very low place, while the position of Hand of the King is now his father’s. Tyrion tries to claim Casterly Rock, but Tywin just ridicules him.

Now let’s talk about Margaery, whom Joffrey has promised to marry in the last season. Unlike the Lannisters who stay away from King’s Landing population, Margaery visits orphans and talk to them personally, making her beloved by common people. Cersei, who loses her power more and more, starts to give a hard side-eye to Margaery, while Joffrey keeps praising her. Meanwhile, Sansa starts to consider Littlefinger’s offer to sneak her out of King’s Landing. However, Ros whispers to Shae to watch out for it.

Away from King’s Landing, Davos Seaworth returns to Stannis, the only one he approves to be a King. He confronts against Melisandre, who claims that she can prevent the carnage at Blackwater, and that’s why he is thrown into the dungeon as a prisoner. Farther away, Dany’s dragons are getting bigger, though still not big enough. Then Dany looks for an army and finds the Unsullied. They are eunuchs who has been dehumanized and become emotionless fighters who will always submit to their master. At the end of the episode, we get to know that Ser Barristan Selmy is still alive and is sworn to Dany in the end.
